Matthew Crawford

Matt Crawford was promoted to Head Coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in June 2019 after serving as the interim head coach for six months.

Crawford had been interim head coach since January 2019, his first year in the program after being hired as the Associate Head Coach for the Banana Slugs in August 2018.

"I believe Matt has the experience, proven leadership capacity and ability to foster a culture of compliance and success for the future of our men's and women's swimming and diving program," said Director of Athletics Susan Harriman.

He led the Banana Slugs to their best combined showing in years at the 2019 Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference meet. The men placed second and the women were ninth. In addition, diver Ethan Johnson qualified for the NCAA Regionals in Iowa. In 2020, the Banana Slug men won their first PCSC title in school history and Crawford was named Conference men's coach of the year.

Crawford, a former UC Davis swimmer, was coach for the Davis Aquamonsters and Elk Grove Aquatics Club before coming to Santa Cruz.
