Box Score SANTA CRUZ, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team improved to 4-1 on the season following a 1-0 victory over the Caltech Beavers on Saturday afternoon in sunny Santa Cruz, California. The Banana Slugs stifled the Beavers attack, outshooting Caltech 14-2 with
Gavin Lane finding the back of the net in the 6th minute for the eventual game winner. The Slugs will be on the road for their next four contest with two SCIAC games in Southern California against Redlands and Whittier on Sept. 18 and Sept. 20 before traveling to Texas to take on the Trinity Tigers and Southwestern Pirates on Sept. 26 and Sept. 28.
How It Happened
Caltech took the first shot of the game in the 3rd minute, but
Tobias Jacobson-Bell was unphased, making the save before the Slugs quickly countered into their attacking third. After earning a corner,
Oliver Gill sent the ball in and found
Gavin Lane who scored with a header to the left post to make it 1-0 in the 6th minute of action.
The Banana Slugs were dominant the rest of the way, taking five more shots in the first half with
Alessandro Castro and
Michael Braun both putting their attempts on net. Caltech was unable to find any momentum in the first half as UC Santa Cruz took their 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Out of the break, UC Santa Cruz continued to control the pace of play, recording eight shots to Caltech's one in the second half. The Banana Slugs had plenty of dangerous chances, putting six shots on frame but Caltech's keeper stood tall in the box to keep the score at 1-0. Caltech managed to take a late shot at the 83:06 minute mark but missed high right as UC Santa Cruz road out the final minutes of action to earn the 1-0 victory over the Beavers.
