CLAREMONT, CA -- In the first of three matches in southern California, UCSC started a tough weekend against #6 Pomona Pitzer. All three matches the slugs played were against teams ranked in the top 15 nationally. Because of the men's Stag-Hen tournament, the singles matches were played first. In five out of the six matches, the slugs took the first set, but Pomona battled back and took five out of the six singles matches. First off the court was freshman Alex Scotten at no. 3 who won in straight sets against Arthi Padmanabhan 6-3, 6-4. Next off was Rachel Shinto at five singles who lost 6-1, 6-2 to Samantha Chao. Everyone else went to three sets, but fell short. Senior Taylor Mannix lost a close match to Kara Wang 6-4, 5-7, 4-6 at the two spot, and Nicole Hannouche dropped a close match at six to Jessica Hsu. Laura Wade fell short against Nicole Holsted at four singles 7-5, 4-6, 2-6, and Ariana Mokhtari lost in a third set tiebreaker to Jaime Solomon 6-3, 4-6, 6-7.

UCSC started off strong in doubles, but fell short in their matches as Pomona swept all three matches. Mokhtari and Mannix were the first off the court, losing to Solomon and Wang 8-4. Angela Humphrey and Hannouche fought hard in a close match before losing to Padmanabhan and Chao 8-5. Last off the court were Scotten and Wade who fell to Holsted and Emily Kawahara 8-5. The next match is the DIII Independent Megabowl vs. Chapman at Chapman University at 2pm.
